Brian,
You can compile VMD from source against Tcl 8.6.x, but you'll have
to update the startup scripts that are encapsulated in the src directory
vmd/lib/scripts/* to ensure it picks up the Tcl 8.6.x versions of the
init.tcl and such. Let me know if you need help with this.
