Have you tried without the "make veryclean"?
The downloaded package contains the prepackaged binaries, which can be
installed with "make install". If you run "make veryclean" first, it
will most probably remove exactly these binaries, and isn't able to
install them afterwards anymore.
That happens when you try to be more intelligent than what the manual
says... ;-)
