When to use a semicolon in a *.conf file?

Hello everyone,

Could someone please tell me when in a *.conf file it is necessary to use a
semicolon at the end of a statement/command? I've noticed that for some
lines it's employed, but not on other lines and I can't seem to identify a
pattern. Thanks.
