yes, OpenCL and CUDA are not that different. in fact, LAMMPS uses an
abstraction that allows to compile the same code for either CUDA or
OpenCL with just a minimal set of special case code.

well, not as much as a Xeon Phi (which should also be programmable
through OpenCL at some point, IIRC). the actual problems to map
scientific applications effectively to those devices is not *that*
different. in all cases, you need to "find" huge amounts of
concurrency. that and the complexity of the computation would
determine how well you can hide latencies and memory bandwidth
the most attractive aspect of the whole development to me is that
accelerators make particularly "expensive" force fields "cheaper". in
other words, complex calculations can be accelerated much better than
streamlined force fields like charmm, amber and alike.
