Hi,
  You'll need to be much more specific in your description of
what you did in step 1). What happens if you run this command in
your modified VMD installation:
  package require textview

Most likely you either missed a file, copied the files in the wrong place,
or have bad permissions on the files that you copied. If you copied the
files correctly, then package require textview should succeed and return
the version number loaded.

Since you're doing this to study how the plugins work, I suppose it's not
of great importance, but this and all of the other new plugins are already
provided in VMD 1.8.4...
