Stefan,
The issue is that the Intel OSPRay library has some non-obvious
shared library dependency that is not being met on some, but not all systems.
If I knew what it was, I would simply include a copy of the shared
library as part of the VMD distribution. Sadly, I have never personally
encounterd this problem on any of the Windows machines that I run, nor
any that have ever been available to me for testing. If I could cause
the problem on-demand, it would have been "fixed" already one way or another.
I had the good foresight to have a the environment variable "safety switch"
to prevent OSPRay from making VMD unusable.
I should point out that not only does VMD do this for OSPRay, but
also for basically every other 3rd party library or processor feature that
VMD uses that might conceivably create a problem during VMD startup
(e.g., SSE, AVX, AVX-512, MPI, OSPRay, OptiX, CUDA, OpenCL, NVEnc, NVPipe, etc).
Each of those libraries has a similar environment variable based mechanism
to permit them to be disabled at runtime.
Best,
John
