As far as Gromacs and VMD are concerned, yes. The IMD functionality uses
TCP/IP communication. However, in most cases for remote connections you
have to work around the fact that most machines have firewalls and you
cannot easily connect to any TCP/IP port from anywhere.
Sometimes this can be handled by using SSH tunneling. How to set this up is
something you can look up, you can look up on the internet.
