Just a short update on this ...

The problem only appears with the versions of VMD compiled from source
.. I've just installed the binary version of 1.9.3, and there is no
issue with the extensions (so far at least).

The compilations of 1.9.2 and 1.9.3 were done with different compiler
(gcc 4.7, 4.8), different CUDA versions (7.5 and 8.0), different NVIDIA
graphics driver versions (360.XX, 375.XX) on openSUSE 42.1. and 42.2
... The problem appears to be independent of these different versions.
