using an external renderer (e.g. one of the supported ray tracing
software packages) *any* resolution that you can fit into the
memory of your machine(s) is possible. have a look at the
corresponding section of the VMD user's guide.

that being said, it appears to me, that you actually mean
highest picture quality and there you should probably first
try using the Tachyon ray tracer that is already bundled
with VMD. a mini-tutorial for particularly high quality images
with ambient occlusion lighting is here:
