yes. even with the current proprietary nvidia drivers, which seem to be
the best supported drivers on linux, there are issues when using
OpenGL apps and composite effects. at the moment you have to make
a choice. gimmicks or science. ;-)

please signal it to the OpenGL driver programmers of the graphics
chipset you are using. this is not VMD's fault. obviously everybody
is so obsessed with making composite effects working, that they
forget about correct OpenGL functionality beyond it.

consider getting an affordable card that supports opengl, thanks to
the heavy competition on the 3d-graphics market, even a mid-range nvidia
card is quite cheap and cards like the GTX 260 deliver an outstanding
performance for the price (and you can get accelerated NAMD for free).
