This explains the "unbalanced brace in a comment" message:

In short, all braces, including those inside commas, must be matched
inside brace-delimited strings such as the body of a loop or conditional,
so this is fine:

# if { 1 } {

but this is not:

if { 1 } {
# if { 1 } {
}
