I had not heard of the Gaussian lambda weighting before, but it is yet
another of many nonlinear lambda schedules that have been tried over the
years. Most of those were designed before soft-core potentials were widely
implemented. With separation-shifted scaling as implemented in current NAMD,
the free energy variation should be smooth enough that simpler lambda
schedules (say, linear piecewise) work just as well.
